Patients frequently ask Dr. King and Dr. McCune about the mission trips they go on. Dr. McCune actually convinced Dr. King to go on her first trip. She started on trips in high school, then continued through college and dental school, finally leading her dental school class trip the last two years. Dr. King kept thinking that there was nothing that she could do on a short term trip because she couldn’t put braces on someone then fly back home- as good as braces look on people, they probably don’t want them on forever.

Dr. McCune convinced her mom that she could learn to do extractions again. There is an amazing dentist who goes on hundreds of trips and Dr. McCune thought that he could teach Dr. King how to extract teeth. She had not pulled any teeth since dental school. Since then she has been on at least 1-2 trips per year all over the world. Her sweet husband, Thad, does all of the sterilization so they can work at a rapid pace. Dr. King says she hates removing people’s teeth because as you can imagine dentists would rather save teeth, but when someone is in pain, it is a big help.

They would love for any patient/parent sibling to go on any trip with them. They have had patients go in the past and it was a blast. There are always lots of jobs to do even if you are not a dentist: you can fit eyeglasses, give instructions, pray with people, help with logistics. It is rewarding and lots of fun.
